It’s not the typical Halloween for twelve-year-old David Gonzales. He and Oliver, his ferret friend from the magical land of Drainovia, are thrust into danger when a young troll named Bertha appears in his world. As David and Oliver search the town for her, they encounter more creatures from other realms. Trouble increases when David and his friends fall through an enchanted painting without their teleporting hats. They land in Faire Haven, where an evil creature called the Umbersnatcher terrorizes fairies and unicorns. Can David find a way to defeat the Umbersnatcher and restore peace in Faire Haven? Can he figure out how to get his friends and himself back to their homes before the portals close and Halloween ends?

CHAPTER 1:

SOFT breath tickled my ear.
“David, wake up. We have a problem.”
I felt tiny pin pricks on my shoulder. “What?” I rubbed by my eyes and opened them to see an upside-down ferret face above my head.
“Hi, David,” Oliver said. “I need your help.”
I turned my head to look at the digital clock on the nightstand. It didn’t surprise me anymore that I could see or hear my talking ferret friend from the magical world of Drainovia. What was strange was the fact he was in my world now. “It’s six o’clock in the morning. What’s wrong?”
Oliver jumped over my head to land on my chest. He took off his teleporting hat and wiped his brow. “One of the trolls is missing. It’s Red Hair-Ring’s daughter, Bertha. She went to get some special bugs from the giant frogs and never came back.” The ferret hopped from one paw to the other. “I’m pretty sure she came to see you in your world.”
“Wait. Sit still and tell me why you think she came up here.” I sat up and slid him onto the blanket beside me.
Oliver sat, crammed his hat back on his head, and then clasped his paws. “The mama frog told Bertha about the dried pinto beans you gave her and how wonderful they were. She thinks Bertha stole a teleporting hat from a Drainosaur and came here to get some beans.” Oliver twitched his nose. “She’s right, too.”
I shook my head. “How do you know? I haven’t seen, heard, or smelled anything like a troll since I was in Drainovia and Trollsylvania.”
“I teleported through your kitchen sink drain and she wasn’t there.” Oliver scratched his chin. “But I found her footprints in your bathroom. She must’ve gone through some sparkly purple gooey stuff in the drain on her way up here.”
I climbed out of bed to get dressed. “When did she go missing?”
Oliver hopped down. “I think it was last night. Red Hair-Ring tried to find her himself. He thought the frogs had hidden her. It wasn’t until we heard them yelling that we found out what happened. Mama frog said that since I knew you, I had to come. Red Hair-Ring said if I didn’t find her in a day or two, he’d come up to get her. He says he has a score to settle with you, after that time in Plumberia when you rescued Alex from him and Blister. He’s a blood thirsty brute. So here I am.”
I was fully awake now. “After he caught me in the plumberry bushes, he threatened to eat me. I barely escaped with Alex and our lives. Is his daughter just like him?”
“Well, they’re doing a program in Plumberia that all trolls have to go through for respecting others. Younger trolls are adapting to the changes, but old ones like Red Hair-Ring are struggling. I think Bertha is nicer, but she’s still a troll.” Oliver tapped on my leg. “Come on.”

"Just when you think Janyce Brawn must have run out of interesting characters and mystical dangers in her first book, here comes book #2 to throw poor David Gonzalez's world into magic chaos again! In DAVID AND THE MISSING TROLL, a young Troll breaks free from the magical words on the underside of the drain, and David must catch her in his Pennsylvania "real world" and get her back home before she creates havoc. Accompanied by Brawn's own artwork of the characters she obviously loves creating, this story will catch your child's imagination and send it soaring!" ~ Suzi Taylor [FIVE STARS]

“DAVID AND THE MISSING TROLL is a delightful, action-filled story for kids! I would recommend it for anyone with young children. Although I don't have kids I can see where children would really enjoy this book. The author keeps putting new obstacles in the path of the characters as they move along. Just when you think they are finally going to solve their issues another obstacle comes along and keeps the story moving. I really think this would keep most kids engaged.” ~ reviewed by Sue Fairchild [FIVE STARS]
